The Couch Tomato Cafe (102 Rector Street) serves award winning pizzas, salads, sandwiches and homemade soups. This week we talked to Laura who works behind the counter at Couch Tomato. She explained to us how The Couch Tomato was started and why it is so unique!
What is your favorite part of this job?
I love the staff here. We are all very good friends. Everyone who works here is so friendly which makes The Couch Tomato a great place to work.
One or two words to describe The Couch Tomato and why?
I would say a combination of modern and traditional. Our restaurant itself is modern in a sense of our decorations and the feel of it. Our food and drinks however are traditional with traditional ingredients.
What is unique about The Couch Tomato?
I think our all-organic food. All of our ingredients are fresh and fall under the "clean eating" category. We have a bunch of farms that provide us with these organic ingredients which is very unique. Also, a lot of our dishes are homemade.
What
was the most challenging aspect of starting your business?
The Couch Tomato has a great history. Our owners Mike and Craig bought this property, tore down the original building and started from scratch. They built this company literally from the ground up which is a great story of how this place came about.
What is your go-to on your menu?
I love the cheesy bread sticks. They're on our sides & snacks portion of the menu and I find myself getting them a lot.
What is the most challenging dish to make on your menu?
I think one of our more unique pizzas like the Veggie House Special. For that pizza we have a few different cheeses and a lot of different vegetables on it which can get a little hectic.
I love Manayunk because.....
I love the neighborhood in Manayunk. Everyone here is so friendly and has a great sense of community. I also like shopping at all of the small businesses on Main Street.
