Why I Love MNYK: Meet Melissa

By Jessie Walker

What better way to find out the ins and outs of Manayunk than from the people themselves? It’s another week where we hit the streets for Why I Love MNYK, to ask Manayunk visitors and residents why they love where they live, shop, dine, and play.

This week we met Melissa outside of Volo Coffeehouse, a common visitor of Manayunk. Check out our interview with her to find out why she is drawn to Manayunk.

How often do you visit Manayunk?

Even though I don’t actually live in Manayunk, I’m here probably about once a week.

What brings you to Manayunk each week? Is it usually with friends or by yourself?

Restaurants, shopping, coffee shops, and lots of different things! Both - I came here with my boyfriend last night and we went to Han Dynasty. But yeah, alone and with friends.

Have you ever been to any of the MDC events around town?

Yeah! I haven’t been to any of them this summer, but last summer I went to the Stroll the Street events. I also went to the spring StrEAT food festival, and two summers ago I went to the Manayunk Arts Festival, which was awesome.

Do you have any favorite restaurants or places around town?

Volo is my favorite coffee shop, I come here to do work a lot. I like going to Manayunk Brewery for happy hour with my coworkers, and I go to Cinderella Nails to get my nails done. I was also just at Han Dynasty last night and it was delicious.

Do you have any recommendations for other visitors of Manayunk or new residents?

I would say to definitely check out all the festivals, they’re all really cool and then you can see what’s going on around town.

What do you love about Manayunk?

I love that I can walk to so many different things in one small area and that it feels really safe and like a neighborhood of people that love to live here.

Thanks for your insights on Manayunk, Melissa! We hope to see you at our 28th Annual Arts Festival, happening this weekend on Saturday and Sunday! Once again, keep an eye out for us on the streets - you might be our next featured resident or visitor! If you are interested in being featured, email for details!
