Greg’s Kitchen, which is located right under the bridge at 4460 Main Street, is the newest breakfast and lunch hot spot in town. I had the opportunity to sit down with the humorous owner, Greg Gillan, to learn more about his solo venture in Manayunk and a few of his entertaining stories along the way.
Greg picked up his passion for cooking as a child, learning techniques and recipes that were passed down from generation to generation. He pondered upon the idea of opening his own restaurant back in 1998 with his childhood friend Ali. However years passed and the idea kept getting pushed under the rug. Greg pursued an education at Temple University and graduated with a degree in Communications. After a few years of working and feeling unsatisfied at his current position, Greg was ready to make his high school dream happen.
The opportunity to open Greg’s Kitchen in Manayunk could not have come at a better time. His friend spotted the location and Greg fell in the love with it. He believes that Manayunk is a great and upcoming niche town with a diverse community which he thinks is the perfect area for his kitchen.
After months of renovations, a little elbow grease, and plenty of help from his friends and family, Greg and his childhood friend, Ali, who is the manager and baker, were finally ready to open the doors to the Manayunk community.
The inside of the restaurant is comfortable with a home-like feel of Sunday morning brunch. Some walls feature black and white murals, created by Greg’s brother, which compliment the cool-toned colors and atmosphere.
He described his breakfast dishes as comfort foods that people grew up on and still love but typically don’t have the time to make. He also explained that he did not want to make fancy out-of-the-box dishes with extravagant ingredients, he simply wants to provide people with delicious dishes that have a home-cooked feel. “Seeing people happy is one of the most rewarding things,” says Greg.
Don’t be hesitant to stop in and try their delicious food. Make sure you say hi to Greg and Ali!
