INSIDE SCOOP: Tips on Gluten Free Eating in Manayunk

Posted by: Anna Dietzmann, Summer 2013 Intern

With new information coming out every day about the latest food health concern, it’s hard to keep up.  One of the biggest concerns today is the negative effect of gluten on our bodies. More and more studies have come out supporting a gluten free lifestyle. But cutting out gluten can be trickier than it looks. Luckily, Manayunk has some great restaurants that are catering specifically to gluten free diners.  Here are some of our tips on where to eat sans gluten here in Manayunk!

The Goat’s Beard: Owner Sean Coyle and Chef Dan Connelly have worked hard to create a menu that makes gluten free eating easy – and delicious! The gluten free menu at The Goat’s Beard features a great mix of seasonal and year-round items. From salads, including a tasty summer chop salad with grilled flank steak, to scallops and chicken, the gluten free options are sure to please.

Manayunk Brewery: The Manayunk Brewery may be known for their specialty beers, but they boast a pretty impressive gluten free menu as well. With four separate categories of mouth-watering gluten free options ranging from appetizer sample plates to entrees (the cedar plank salmon in a cherry glaze is a personal favorite), the Brew Pub has one of the best gluten free menus in Manayunk.

Bourbon Blue: Bourbon Blue’s gluten free menu is full of the fresh tastes of summer! There are lots of salads and entrée options and, of course, some classic New Orleans inspired dishes like their Creole Bouillabaisse, a seafood stew. As an added bonus, Bourbon Blue’s gluten free menu also includes a list of gluten free beverages to enjoy with your meal. Don’t mind if I do!

Bella Tratoria: If you’re trying to go gluten free but don’t think you can give up pizza, Bella Tratoria is the place for you. Bella Tratoria offers a full line of gourmet pizzas and provides the option of gluten free crusts for all of them.

Bisou: Bisou's gluten free selection puts a modern, healthy twist on their signature French cuisine. This is definitely the place to go if you are feeling adventurous. With gluten free selections from escargot and duck breast hors d'oeuvres to principal dishes including rainbow trout with an artichoke puree, Bisou is the perfect decadent treat.

The Couch Tomato: Like Bella Tratoria, The Couch Tomato also offers a full line gluten free pizza and crusts. Another gluten free favorite on their menu are the breadsticks -- the perfect indulgence without the guilt!

Whirled Peace: That’s right; you can have dessert too! Whirled Peace frozen yogurt on Main Street in Manayunk has over 40 flavors and just about every one of them is gluten free. Whirled Peace alternates between the flavors throughout the year and has about 10 flavors in-store at a time.

Do you have any gluten free favorites in Manayunk that aren’t on this list? Let us know! We would love to hear your comments.

WOW! I had no idea that there were this many options in Manayunk! I was there a couple of months ago and really struggled to find food out I could eat since I have a gluten allergy. This post was great and so informative! THANKS!
