MERCHANT SPOTLIGHT: Writers and Artists and Musicians, Oh My!

What do two authors, an artist, and a musician have in common? They all come together at the Spiral Bookcase’s “Spiral Salon,” a new monthly event in Manayunk. Ann Tetreault, owner of The Spiral Bookcase, started the salon in January as a way to bring people together to experience the creativity of Philadelphia’s local talent.

“The intention is to bring together authors, poets, musicians, and artists in the same space,” said Tetreault.”  Each salon features a variety of creative people.  Visitors can mingle, listen, and discuss while enjoying light refreshments. “We wanted to do something different than the regular standard readings, which we do have, but just something different that might interest people,” she noted.

In creating the Spiral Salon, Tetreault was inspired by the 1920s Parisian coffee shop mentality. Many different kinds of people with similar ideals would gather in a single space to meet each other and talk about their ideas. Her event puts a modern spin on this concept, with a focus on the creative minds from Philadelphia’s backyard.

February’s event featured an impressive lineup of local talent. Elliott Ridenour and Daniel DiFranco are creative writing students at Arcadia University’s MFA program, and both read original pieces of work. Artist Katie O’Connor showed her exhibit of Barbies that are intended to convey a sense of grace, simplicity, and emotion. Finally, Neon and Shy, the music project of Dan Nosheny, performed his collection of eclectic songs. Both January and February’s salons were huge successes .

The Spiral Bookcase has truly become an inclusive, communal space that invites the entire community in. Don’t miss the next salon, which will be held on Thursday, March 21st at 7 p.m. at 112 Cotton Street in Manayunk. If you are an author, musician, or artist interested in getting involved in the event, please email . For a creative, collaborative, and community-based event, look no further than the Spiral Salon.
