Know Before You Go: Plein on Main
Stroll the Street kicks off with Manayunk’s very own plein air painting competition. Plein on Main, presented by Manayunk Development Corporation and Orbit Art Gallery, is the perfect kick off to the event series.
WHAT IS PLEIN AIR PAINTING?
Plein air painting is the practice of painting outdoors, with the subject in full view, and capturing the essence of the landscape through color, movement, and natural light. The term comes from the French phrase en plein air, which means "in the open air". With Manayunk's historic Main Street, iconic bridge, and vibrant canal and towpath, the neighborhood is sure to inspire beautiful plein air pieces.
WHEN IS PLEIN ON MAIN?
Thursday, June 6 from 11a.m. to 8 p.m.
Rain date - Thursday, June 13 from 11a.m. to 8p.m.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT PLEIN ON MAIN?
Plein Air Painting - From 11a.m. to 5p.m., all painting will take place in the natural elements from Leverington Avenue to Shurs Lane and from Cresson Street to the Manayunk Canal. We encourage you to stroll the street as artists bring their work to life!
Community Showcase, Reception, & Awards - From 5:30p.m. to 8p.m., you are invited to the Community Showcase to see all competing pieces, meet the artists, and grab some light bites courtesy of Winnie's Manayunk. Award winners will be announced towards the end of the night, and original artwork will be available for purchase during and after the event.
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON THAT NIGHT?
Plein on Main is a part of Manayunk's summer series Stroll the Street. On Stroll the Street nights, Main Street will come alive with live music, 15+ local artists & vendors, happy hour specials, and shopping deals all while leaning into the creative community with events like Plein on Main all summer long.
PRIZES:
Awards and prizes will be determined by the Plein on Main judges including Artist in Residence at The Barnes Foundation, Jonathan Pinkett. All artists will submit one piece of art to compete for the $1000 grand prize. Prizes will also be awarded for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th place. There will also be a People's Choice Award voted on by you! All People's Choice voters will be entered to win MNYK swag and gift certificate.
