7 DAY SPOTLIGHT: Awakenings Pole Fitness
Blog post by Manayunk Development Corporation Spring Intern, Meghan Gatti.
Bored with the same tired workout? Looking to switch to something exciting, yet challenging? Awakenings Pole Dance Fitness may be the perfect fit!
Heather Day Slawek, founder and owner of Awakenings Pole Dance Fitness has always had a passion for athleticism. Coming from a fitness background as an athlete, instructor and formally trained dancer, Heather tried her first pole fitness class in 2006 after having her second daughter. Within a few weeks, she was dropping the baby weight and feeling extremely happy with herself. In 2008, Heather opened her first studio in King of Prussia, where it was the only pole studio in all of Montgomery County. Within a few years the demand was so high for classes, that she opened her second studio in Manayunk. “I found Manayunk as the perfect place to start a second studio. It was such a changing, evolving community, and I think people tend to be very eclectic and open-minded. There has been so much going on in the development of Manayunk, with so many events and such a sense of community, it feels alive. There was a draw to the studio with many young professionals in the area interested in trying something alternative. "
Pole fitness is the foundation of the studio however; the studio offers aerial classes and acrobatic fitness classes. In aerial classes students explore the hanging silks, lyra, or hanging hoop, as well as single hanging silk hammocks. These help build strength and flexibility while the students are suspended in air. Heather encourages students to let go of fears--especially when trying out the beginner classes! While it may be nerve wracking at first, it could also turn into a new passion.
Safety always comes first at Awakenings and all of Heather's instructors are certified in group fitness and/or pole fitness or aerial fitness. All of Awakenings' instructors go through six months of apprenticeship learning the precise curriculum for the class before they can teach. Even students must test into upper-level classes to advance. While fitness is their passion, many Awakenings instructors have completely different day jobs--one instructor, Jill, is an editor for a major publishing company. Another instructor Regina, is a pole and aerial instructor who recently earned her Master's Degree in Marriage and Family counseling and works full-time as a counselor.
Awakenings encourages anyone to try out beginner level classes, no experience or skill required. "First timers can be nervous when they walk in, not really knowing what to expect," says Heather. The beginning level classes are all a regimented curriculum designed to build strength and make everyone feel successful. It's a challenging class, but not scary, and definitely a great workout. If you don't know which class is right for you--try them all! Right now Awakenings is offering an unlimited month of classes for only $100 ($195 value). By the third week, students feel stronger than ever. Usually, for beginners, shorts or long tight pants are suggested as well as a tank top. No shoes necessary! Try one or two classes per week to find the perfect fit and get in shape in a judgment free zone. If you are interested in heels however, Stilettos and Spins is the only class where heels are a must.
While the classes are a lot of fun, one of the most rewarding things the instructors feel is the transformation in their pupils. Not only do the students get in shape but they also really build confidence in themselves. From helping students advance in level and skill to powerful weight loss testimonials, Heather and the other instructors often say, "This is why we do what we do." Heather's advice for getting fit for the New Year is, "Try to find something you love. If its drudgery you won't stick to it. A workout should be fun, you want to forget that you are working out. Keeps your body moving, whether it's running, spinning, indoor rowing or pole fitness. If you start to plateau, try something new or different!"
Awakenings fall and spring sessions end with a recital that packs family and friends into the studio! They are family friendly performances that highlight the amazing talent and skill the students have acquired. Attendance has grown so much over the past few years and tickets sell out quickly! On February 7th, there is an instructors showcase, where the teachers get the spotlight to show off their skills. The show is also a great way to get a preview of certain types of classes offered, and see the talent of the Awakenings team. Tickets can be found on Awakenings website!
When asked ‘why Manayunk?’ “Heather responded, "You walk down the street and you see so many people you know—which is so unique for a major city. Manayunk has been very accepting of pole fitness—many students are also locals. There is even talk of outdoor aerial equipment for summer 2015 (some may even be featured in PLAY Manayunk this year!) Manayunk feels alive, that’s what great. After our recitals we flood the restaurants such as Manayunk Brewery." Manayunk classes are an excellent way to spend a girls night out. Sometimes surrounding salons, bars and restaurants offer packages for bachelorette parties or even just for a night out with best friends. Girls can go get their nails and hair done, bond with an empowering workout, and finish the night by going out and experiencing Manayunk night life--no relocating required!
