Residents and visitors to the Schuylkill River at East Falls and Manayunk appreciate this urban oasis. These communities provide a unique opportunity to experience nature while taking advantage of all the resources a city neighborhood has to offer. There are many opportunities to get involved in beautifying the neighborhood; volunteer groups surrounding the river and its tributaries, trails, and green space abound, focusing on the greening of our villages along the river.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
-Margaret Mead (1902-1978); Cultural Anthropologist
This quotation perfectly describes the volunteer groups in Manayunk, East Falls, Roxborough, Shawmont, and Lower Merion. For many years, local volunteer groups have been completing projects large and small to make our neighborhoods, parks, and waterways beautiful. These groups do indeed change the world, one flower, one tree, and one clean-up at a time.

The Umbria Street Neighbor Association’s goal is for the Fountain Street Steps to be a beautiful open green space, providing safe access to the Manayunk Canal and towpath. This endeavor is achieved by holding two flea markets with proceeds going towards the project, and with dedicated neighborhood volunteers conducting large clean-ups and planting sessions along with additional maintenance year-round. With an emphasis on low maintenance, the group has recently added native plants to restore the ecology of the site and improve the look of the steps. The Philadelphia Water Department's Office of Watersheds is also working with the group on improving the steps.
